So please inform me by e-mail about interesting developments in your country within the next two weeks, for example growing number of members, youth activities, better contacts after WMSG, new big tournaments, Inseis in Korea, Japan and China from your country, future plannings, problems, e.t.c.

Thanks for your cooperation and hoping to meet you all latest in Groningen

Martin Stiassny

(European IGF director)
(Vice President EGF)

Dear Martin,

Replying to your letter we are glad to inform you that our hopeless undertaking of developing the game of go in Ukraine goes quite well.

In Beijing our team reached the quarterfinal and keeping tongue in cheek we may boast to be among eight most powerful go/weiqi/baduk nations in the world ahead of the likes of USA, UK, Germany and especially Russia. The only G8 nation stronger than us is Japan.

The membership of the Ukrainian Go Federation does not grow with time noticeably, the number of 5th dans does. The game is still not known to the majority of population who rather prefer to play politics.

Our youth is doing well, going from strong to stronger. At the moment the rating leader in Ukraine is 16 year old Artem Kachanovskyy. Established senior players have problems of qualifying to the finals of Ukrainian championship. The current Ukrainian champion and Meijin too is Bohdan Zhurakovky, if older than Artem not by much. And this is only the beginning… a new wave (vague nouvelle) is coming.

As for the inseis, Maria Zacharchenko, 14 years old, is studying baduk in Korea with Chun 8p.

Tournaments are only thing that our Federation does regularly and mostly in time. We have the Ukrainian championship 2-nd league, Ukrainian cup, Korean Ambassador Cup, the Japanese Society Cup. The stronger players qualify from the 2-nd league to the first league formed of 16 players who try to qualify to the Championship finals – the Premier League of 8 players. Those 8 players determine the winner in the round-robin tourney which is a fight.

Additionally we have big tournaments in Odessa, Rivne and Crimea. And last but not least, for several years we are running Ukrainian Meijin tournament. It is without much prize money but a very interesting all year competition. There is a Meijin league of 9 players who play each other in the round-robin tournament to determine the challenger. It is very much like Japanese Meijin – qualification to the League, monthly games in the League with rather big time allowance of 2.5 hours. Then there is a title match: best of five games. Recently we have discovered internet and air one of the games every much and all title games on KGS. This is the experience that many countries might find interesting, especially the smaller ones, because our country is quite big, which is the reason that some players don’t play not wishing to travel 500 km there and back again every month.

We also have championships for women, youth, youthlings, pair go and in some cities a system of weakly Sunday rapid tournaments that runs all year except summer.

The Beijing Games were very interesting and rather successful for our team. The international contacts are not very good for us anyway as there always are visa problems and the question of financing. In view of this Ukrainian players are very rare guests to the European Go Congress.

We do not have any particular plans for the future except of keeping on with the tournaments and enjoy go.

We also have a lot of problems. Our Federation is not officially registered. The obstacles are the Ministry of Sport and Youth requirement to have divisions in at least 15 of 25 territorial regions, a permanent address, a paid accountant who would deal with the little money we have and report our inexistent profit for taxation and above all a strong will on our part to finish with the paperwork. As the result the financial support from the state is very small.

We can boast to have paid our fees to the European Go Federation and IGF for this year and a year ahead. Yet we are terrified by the perspective of having to pay for the doping control tests which IGF is planning to impose on us quite soon.

I wonder if you are going to read our long report this far.

Cheers,

Igor Goliney

Kachanovskyj, Zhurakovskyj, Zakharchenko Marija

the majority of population who rather prefer to play politics
prefers playing?

16 year old Artem
16-year-old

problems of qualifying
problems with

The current Ukrainian champion and Meijin too is Bohdan Zhurakovky
(без артикля) Current Ukrainian champion and also Ukrainian Meijin is Bohdan Zhurakovsky - наверное Украинский Мейдзин надо писать...

It is without much prize money but a very interesting all year competition
but (не хватает союза) nevertheless a very interesting all-year competition

Recently we have discovered internet and air one of the games every much and all title games on KGS

tournaments that runs all year except summer
tournaments that run the whole year long except summer

keeping on with the tournaments and enjoy go
and enjoying go

the Ministry of Sport and Youth
Sports

Dear Martin,

Replying to your letter we are glad to inform you that our hopeless undertaking of developing the game of go in Ukraine goes quite well.

In Beijing our team reached the quarterfinal and keeping tongue in cheek we may boast to be among eight most powerful go/weiqi/baduk nations in the world ahead of the likes of USA, UK, Germany and especially Russia. The only G8 nation stronger than us is Japan.

Our pair go representatives also did well, qualifying to the elimination stage and then reaching the quarterfinal of the amateur part of the competition. Our pair, Maria Zakharchenko and Yuriy Plushch, were also 4th in the 19th Pair Go World Championship.

The membership of the Ukrainian Go Federation does not grow with time noticeably, the number of 5th dans does. The game is still not known to the majority of population who rather prefer playing politics.

Our youth is doing well, going from strong to stronger. In 2008, they swept the European titles in both under-12 and under-18 age groups. Both titles were lost in 2009. At the moment the rating leader in Ukraine is 16 year old Artem Kachanovskyy. Established senior players have problems with qualifying to the finals of Ukrainian championship. The current Ukrainian champion, and the Ukranian Meijin as well, is Bohdan Zhurakovky, if older than Artem not by much. And this is only the beginning… a new wave (vague nouvelle) is coming.

As for the inseis, Maria Zacharchenko, 14 years old, is studying baduk in Korea with Chun Poong Jho, 8p.

Tournaments are the only thing that our Federation does regularly and mostly in time. Recently we have discovered internet and air one of the monthly league games and all title games on KGS. This is the experience that many countries might find interesting, especially the smaller ones, because our country is quite big, which is the reason why some players don’t participate not wishing to travel 500 km there and back again every month.

We also have championships for women, under-18 youth, under-12 kids, pair go and in some cities a system of weekly Sunday rapid tournaments that run all year long except for summer.

The Beijing Games were very interesting and rather successful for our team. Our representatives enjoyed them, the go community enjoyed the success of our representatives and the general opinion is that we would like to have more of the same.

As I am advised to say:

The Mind Games helped our players establish closer ties, both personal and competitive, with players from other countries. The tournaments with participation of the strongest amateurs in the world and the most renown professionals as well give strong impetus for the psychological incentive to promote Go in each country. Each player who participated in the Games has probably developed a strong desire to attend a similar tournament once more. The system of Mind Games should be continued on regular basis.

In general our international contacts are not very good as there always are visa problems and the questions of financing. In view of this Ukrainian players are very rare guests to the European Go Congresses.

We do not have any particular plans for the future except keeping on with the tournaments and enjoying go.

We would also appreciate any help, for example in the form of go equipment.

I wonder if you are going to read our long report this far.

Cheers,
